Bavarian State Minister of Sciences visits ibidi GmbH
Munich, Germany, April 08, 2013 – Biotechnology company, ibidi GmbH, in Martinsried, recently received an important visitor, Dr. Wolfgang Heubisch, the Bavarian State Minister of Sciences, Research and the Arts. During in-depth talks with ibidi’s founders, Dr. Heubisch caught up on the company’s successful development, since receiving support from the Bavarian state government in 2001.
The State Minister learned that ibidi has pioneered the use of plastic as a material for bio-slides, which can simulate an organ-like environment. Within just a few years of this development, the company has managed to become the world-leading supplier of plastic materials for use in cell-based microscopy assays.
In addition to the bio-slides, ibidi offers complete, functional, cell-based assays for the study of cell migration, wound healing, chemotaxis, and angiogenesis, among others. “These products allow for detailed research on cells and cell clusters, in life-like surroundings,” explains Dr. Roman Zantl, General Manager and Head of Research and Development at ibidi GmbH. “They show a great potential for success in biomedical research, toxicological screenings, and in the development of new drugs. This technology could help researchers to recognize any potential side effects of new drug candidates much earlier than standard methods and, therefore, strongly reduce development costs.”
In 2001, ibidi GmbH started as a spin-off company from the Technical University Munich and the Center for Nanoscience at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich. Their primary business idea was to produce microfluidic cell chambers for use in microscopy. In the early stages of this highly innovative, technology enterprise (2001 – 2003), ibidi was partially funded by the “Förderprogramm zum leichteren Übergang in eine Gründerexistenz (FLÜGGE)” - a support program for start-up companies offered by the Bavarian state government.
Over the last 12 years, ibidi has managed to become the world-leading provider of disposables for cell-based microscopy assays, and has been acknowledged in more than 2,000 scientific publications. In recognition of this, and other important factors, ibidi was also recently awarded the prestigious “Innovationspreis der Deutschen Wirtschaft” (German Economy Innovation Award), in the “Medium-Sized Business” category, in March 2013.

Wissenschafts-Staatsminister Dr. Heubisch besucht das FLÜGGE-Alumni-Unternehmen ibidi GmbH
München, Deutschland, 08. April 2013 – Der Staatsminister für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst, Dr. Wolfgang Heubisch, besuchte heute die Biotechnologie-Firma ibidi GmbH im IZB Martinsried. In intensiven Gesprächen mit führenden Mitarbeitern des Unternehmens informierte sich Dr. Heubisch über die erfolgreiche Entwicklung der Firma seit ihrer FLÜGGE-Förderung im Jahr 2001.
Die ibidi GmbH hatte es erstmalig möglich gemacht, dass Kunststoff als Material für Bioträger zur Simulation eines naturgetreuen biologischen Umfelds verwendet werden kann. Innerhalb weniger Jahre gelang es der Firma, weltweit der führende Anbieter von Kunststoffartikeln für zellbasierte Mikroskopie-Assays zu werden.
Mittlerweile bietet ibidi vollständige funktionelle zellbasierte Assays an – so zum Beispiel für die Untersuchung von Zellmigration, Wundheilung, Chemotaxis oder Angiogenese. „Die Produkte ermöglichen die Untersuchung von Zellen und Zellverbünden in einer naturgetreuen Umgebung,“ erklärt Dr. Roman Zantl, Geschäftsführer und Leiter Forschung & Entwicklung. „Sie besitzen somit großes Potenzial für die biomedizinische Forschung, für toxikologische Untersuchungen und in der Entwicklung neuer Medikamente. Die Technologie kann helfen, potenzielle Nebenwirkungen von Wirkstoffkandidaten deutlich früher zu erkennen und dadurch die Entwicklungskosten stark zu reduzieren.“
Die ibidi GmbH entstand 2001 als Ausgründung der TU München und des Center for Nanoscience der LMU München. Die ursprüngliche Geschäftsidee war die Herstellung von mikrofluidischen Zellkammern für die Mikroskopie. In der Frühphase der Unternehmensgründung 2001bis 2003 wurde diese hochinnovative Technologie durch das „Förderprogramm zum leichteren Übergang in eine Gründerexistenz (FLÜGGE)“ der Bayrischen Staatsregierung gefördert.
Die ibidi GmbH hat es innerhalb von 12 Jahren geschafft, der weltweit führende Anbieter von Einmalartikeln für zellbasierte Mikroskopie-Assays zu werden. Dies ist in mehr als 2000 wissenschaftlichen Publikationen mit ibidi-Produkten dokumentiert. Nicht zuletzt dafür wurde ibidi im März 2013 mit dem Innovationspreis der Deutschen Wirtschaft in der Kategorie Mittelstand ausgezeichnet.
