Maximum intensity projection of a 3D-Structured Illumination Microscopy (SIM) image of the actin-cytoskeleton of an interphase Retina pigmented epithelium cell. The actin cytoskeleton of a fixed RPE1 cell was labeled with Alexa488-phallodin, the color encodes for different z-positions (orange/yellow/ green/blue/red). The increased lateral and axial resolution of 3D-SIM allows not only the visualization of the dense actin network at the leading edge, but also the separation of individual stress fiber bundles at the bottom of the cell (green bundles at the center of the cell).
