Vascular Research

Described by my colleagues as an “alien rave”, this image depicts a mouse’s villi, small finger-like projections which absorb nutrients and water from food in the small intestine. Red blood cells are shown in green, cell death marker Annexin V in red, and platelets in blue, shown here to be clogging the microvasculature in the villi after ischemia reperfusion injury. These images form part of an in vivo animal model investigating the drivers behind endothelial dysfunction and microvascular obstruction. Image acquired using a µ-Dish 35 mm, high Glass Bottom on a Zeiss 880 confocal microscope with a 10x objective.
