A composite image of cross sections through embryonic stem cell spheres (ESCS) grown in 3D culture. The cells gradually self-organize into a rosette-like structure where subsequently a central lumen is established. This process closely resembles the morphogenesis of the pluripotent lineage at the time of implantation. The cells are stained for the pluripotency marker Oct4 (white), the apical determinant aPKC (green), phalloidin (red) and DAPI (blue).
