The PROTEOfectene® reagents (Biontex Laboratories GmbH) were developed to enable the direct uptake of proteins and antibodies through the lipid membrane of cells by endocytosis. Using this procedure, shuttled proteins reach the cytosol and act directly in signal transduction. If the antibodies/proteins are labeled, their fate can be followed directly using microscopy.

To ensure that the proteofection procedure is working, either a fluorescent protein (R-Phycoerythrin) or an antibody (FITC-IgG) is included in the kit. These positive controls are useful tools for an easy evaluation of the experimental results.
